Diamond Formation
It is uncertain exactly how diamonds originated. The magma in which
they are formed comes from some 200 km beneath the earth's surface.
About 100 million years ago volcanic activity raised the magma close
to the surface of the earth. As a result of this forceful activity
loose particles of carbon, under intense pressure and heat, crystallized
into diamonds.
Diamonds were trapped in the solidified magma pipes, known as Kimberlite
rock.
